Hiking pleasure for the eyes, nose, and ears: The hiking trails on the Walmendingerhorn will transport you to a stunning mountain world. Experience the Walmendingerhorn in summer 2026

After 60 years of service, our trusty and reliable Walmendingerhorn cable car is retiring. A new cable car will be built in the summer of 2026, improving the infrastructure, comfort, and accessibility at the Walmendingerhorn. You can look forward to larger cabins and therefore shorter waiting times, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows for phenomenal views and barrier-free access.

Although regular train service is suspended, you can still enjoy the mountain scenery around the Walmendingerhorn on varied hikes and with cozy places to stop for refreshments.

Hiking tours on the Walmendingerhorn during the construction phase

Many hiking trails around the Walmendingerhorn will remain open during the construction work on the new Walmendingerhorn cable car. Please observe the signposted closures and information regarding construction traffic.

Hirschegg High Trail – Baad via Zaferna, Bühlalpe & Stutzalpe

The panoramic high trail from Hirschegg to Baad via Zaferna, Bühlalpe, and Stutzalpe is fully open and offers numerous opportunities to stop for refreshments along the way.

Hiking Trails Around the Maxhütte

The hiking trail from the high trail to the Maxhütte is partially open.

During cable installation work from August to mid-October, the trail will be temporarily closed. More detailed information regarding the closure times will follow later this summer.

The path from the high trail to the Maxhütte remains open. Due to occasional excavator operations, we ask for your extra caution.

Around Stutzalpe, Lüchlealpe & Schwarzwassertal
The following hiking trails are fully open:

Baad – Stutzalpe
The hiking trail from Baad to Stutzalpe is open.

However, the Hennenalp forest road remains closed due to construction traffic. For a short section of approximately 120 meters, the hiking trail shares the same path as the construction road – please exercise particular caution there.

The trail from Obere Walmendingeralpe towards Lüchlealpe is closed.

The reason for this is construction site crossings and the necessary access for trucks and construction equipment.

Construction traffic is generally to be expected in the area of the access road to the mountain station.

During the cable installation work from August to mid-October, this area will also be closed. More detailed information will follow during the summer season.

Walmendingerhorn Summit Trail

The trail to the summit of the Walmendingerhorn will remain closed for the entire duration of the construction phase.

Please observe the signs on site and keep your distance from construction areas. Thank you for your understanding!

Relaxed hiking on the Walmendingerhorn for beginners, children and seniors

The Walmendingerhorn is perfect as an alpine introduction for hiking novices or for hiking with children (https://www.ok-bergbahnen.com/aktiv-sport/wandern/wandern-mit-kindern/). The Walmendingerhorn cable car takes you from the valley station in Mittelberg up to the mountain station at 1,946 m. Here you have the opportunity to enjoy the summit air on the easy alpine flower trail without having to undertake the entire strenuous climb.

Trail 1: Natural Alpine Flower Trail to the Summit

Walking time: approx. 25 minutes
Difficulty: easy

The highlight for all flower lovers: Start your short hike with a ride on the cable car. From the sun terrace of the Walmendingerhorn cable car, the short and easy alpine flower trail leads to the summit cross of the Walmendinger Horn. Along the way, you can admire the expansive flower landscapes in their impressive diversity. Once at the summit, you'll be rewarded with one of the most beautiful panoramic views in the Kleinwalsertal valley: The view extends towards the Allgäu region and the Hoher Ifen mountain, as well as towards the Widderstein mountain in the Kleinwalsertal valley. After descending to the mountain station, you can continue enjoying the summit experience in the Gipfelstuba restaurant and on its sun terrace.

Path 2: Walmendingerhorn – Upper Lüchlealpe

Walking time: approx. 45 minutes
Difficulty: moderate

A hike for the senses: This tour also starts at the Walmendingerhorn cable car mountain station and leads along fragrant alpine flowers. Across sunny pastures and lush alpine meadows, surrounded by an impressive mountain panorama, you hike along the well-maintained, sometimes steep, alpine path to the Sennalpe (alpine dairy) at an altitude of 1,760 meters. The perfect opportunity to stock up on homemade Walser mountain cheese from the farm and other Allgäu delicacies. After a break at the upper Lüchlealp, you'll climb back up to the mountain station, refreshed and invigorated.

Easy to moderate hiking tours for sporty families and leisurely hikers

For those who enjoy a moderate 2.5 to 4-hour hike with a gentle incline, focusing on blooming meadows and relaxation, the Walmendingerhorn is the perfect destination. Several mountain tours are suitable for those with some hiking experience who don't want to overexert themselves but still appreciate the authentic alpine hiking experience. These routes, ranging from easy to moderate in difficulty, are easily manageable with the right hiking gear and good physical condition.

The Walmendingerhorn also offers challenging hiking routes for experienced hikers who enjoy a good challenge. Do you love adventure and only truly appreciate summit views and a delicious schnitzel after you've "earned" them? Then these tours with significant elevation gains and technically demanding sections are perfect for you:

Path 2+3: Walmendingerhorn – Stutzalpe – Bühlalpe – Mittelberg

Hiking time: approx. 2.5 hours
Difficulty: moderate

A challenging hike rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Kleinwalsertal valley and the Widderstein mountain at its end. Upon reaching the mountain station, you can enjoy the impressive panorama and the alpine atmosphere at the summit and on the viewing platform. The descent leads back down to the valley via flower-filled alpine meadows. During the descent, the Stulzalpe and the Gasthaus Bühlalpe offer inviting places to stop for refreshments and a rest before you reach the valley station.

  • Drive through Germany via Oberstdorf into the Kleinwalsertal valley.

  • You will find several paid parking options directly at the valley station.

Getting There by Public Transport

  • If you are traveling by train, take the train to Oberstdorf.
  • From there, the Walserbus line 1 will take you directly to the Mittelberg Walmendingerhornbahn stop.
