Hindelang Via Ferrata: Magnificent Views & Athletic Adventure
Looking for a new challenge? You'll need to be fit for the Hindelang Via Ferrata near Oberstdorf – and should plan a full day hike. From the valley station, where you can conveniently park, you'll take the Oberstdorf Kleinwalsertal Bergbahnen cable car up to the summit station. Then it's time to put on your helmet and off you go! You're guaranteed to enjoy magnificent views on the via ferrata on the Nebelhorn.
The Hindelang Via Ferrata was built between 1973 and 1978 by the Allgäu/Immenstadt Alpine Club section and the Nebelhornbahn and was renovated in 2003 – for its 25th anniversary. In addition to appropriate equipment and experience, the climb requires safety in high-alpine terrain, absolute surefootedness and a head for heights. Where necessary, the path is secured with steel cables, hooks, and ladders. Although it is classified as moderately difficult according to an international standard, with short sections as difficult, the trail is considered challenging due to its length. Under normal conditions, it is possible to walk it from June to October, but always pay attention to stable weather conditions – especially with regard to the risk of thunderstorms!
Route & stages of the Hindelang via ferrata
Route Summary: Nebelhorn summit station – start – western Wengenkopf – intermediate descent 1 – intermediate descent 2 – eastern Wengenkopf – exit. Return via Koblat to the Nebelhornbahn mountain station.
- Airy ladder right at the start: After taking the cable car to the summit station, you have the opportunity to survey the entire rocky, intimidating mountain ridge at the Nebelhorn summit, and thus the course of the Hindelang via ferrata all the way to the Großer Daumen. Below the station, a small mountain path crosses towards the start. After beginning the tour with the first easy climbing sections, you reach the actual start, a ladder approximately 10 m high up to the ridge of the western Wengenkopf.
- Iron path with panoramic views: Once you reach the trail, the "iron path" leads along the ridge to the western Wengenkopf over the first exposed climbing sections. From the summit, which, in good visibility, offers panoramic views from the Zugspitze to Switzerland, the route continues across the rocky ridge along the steel cable safety lines, over ladders, rocky notches, and exposed ridge passages toward the eastern Wengenkopf.
- Concentration and fitness until the end: Those who complete the via ferrata to its end still have a number of climbing aids, wire rope safety lines, and iron ladders ahead of them. On the descent from the eastern Wengenkopf, the via ferrata reaches the lowest point of the mountain ridge. Finally, climbing an airy rock formation requires utmost concentration and good fitness before reaching the end of the Hindelang via ferrata below the Großer Daumen.
Duration & options on the Hindelang via ferrata
From the Nebelhorn summit, you can reach the Großer Daumen (2,280 m) in about four to five hours via the Hindelang via ferrata. From the Großer Daumen, the return journey to the Höfatsblick Nebelhorn station via the "Koblat" plateau takes about two hours. To allow you to abort the climb at any time in the event of a thunderstorm, fog, or snowstorm, several marked intermediate descents (emergency descents) lead to the "Koblat" high plateau, from where you can return to the Nebelhorn cable car. There are no descents into the Retterschwanger Valley – danger of falling!
The extension via the Kleiner Daumen (2,190 m) and Rotspitze (2,033 m) leads to the 1,887 m Breitenberg, from where you can reach Hinterstein or Bad Hindelang. The entire traverse from the Nebelhorn to Bad Hindelang takes nine to eleven hours. For ambitious mountaineers, it's possible to climb the Großer Daumen (Great Thumb). Afterwards, the hike continues via the Koblat back to the Nebelhorn cable car's mountain station.
Hindelang Via Ferrata – Difficulties & Beginner Variation
The Hindelang via ferrata requires practice, surefootedness, a complete head for heights, as well as experience and safety in alpine terrain. The best time to climb the route is from June to October. At the most difficult sections, it is secured with steel cables, hooks, and ladders in accordance with via ferrata standards.
For beginners and those who don't want to climb the entire route to the Thumb, we have built an exit. This takes you from the summit station via the via ferrata back to the Höfatsblick station of the Nebelhornbahn cable car in two hours.
Please note: The Hindelang via ferrata should not be climbed in wet or slippery conditions or during thunderstorms – the wire ropes are life-threatening!
