After more than 60 years, an era will end at the Walmendingerhorn after the 2025/2026 winter season. This cable car has accompanied generations of locals and visitors, taking them to the mountain for unforgettable experiences.
Every ending also marks a new beginning. The modernization at the Walmendingerhorn is all about greater comfort, quality, and accessibility.
Our guests can look forward to:
Unforgettable views thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, similar to those on the Fellhorn cable car.
More comfort for strollers, wheelchairs, or sports equipment thanks to barrier-free access.
A mountain experience without long waits thanks to increased capacity.
The Walmendingerhorn cable car is scheduled to reopen on December 24, 2026.
The construction diary for the new Walmendingerhorn cable car
Visible progress is being made at the construction site: At the end of April, preparations for support pillar 2 were carried out using a walking excavator.
Since mid-May, drilling work for the anchors has also been underway at the mountain station. Simultaneously, the timber anchor wall, including reinforced earth, is being constructed there. The first concrete work at the valley station has also begun.
Another crane was delivered to the Ifen parking lot on May 18th and then airlifted by helicopter to support pillar 2 the following day – a spectacular step on the way to the new cable car.
Another visible step forward at the Walmendingerhorn: Support 1 has been successfully dismantled.
At the same time, the material ropeway – the "lifeline" of the construction site – is now operational.
Demolition work at the mountain station is also in full swing. 🚠
Another major milestone has been reached: The crane has been erected – ready for the upcoming work. The necessary crane components were flown by Super Puma helicopter from the Ifen parking lot to the Walmendingerhorn mountain station. 🚁
At the same time, the interior demolition of the valley station has begun, making way for the new building. 🚧
Another important step has been completed: The old cabins of the Walmendingerhorn cable car have been dismantled and the cables successfully removed.
Preparations for the next construction phases are underway – the first crane components have already been prepared.
This clears the way for the upcoming work on the new building.
- Partial demolition of the valley and mountain stations
- Dismantling of the existing cable car technology, including cable storage
- Preparations for the erection of the construction cranes, planned for April
- Carrying out the necessary clearing work
- Construction of the material cableways – these are necessary to transport the building materials up the mountain later.
Following the modernization of the Fellhorn cable car I: https://www.ok-bergbahnen.com/unternehmen/qualitaetsmassnahmen/modernisierung-fellhornbahn/ and the revitalization of the Möser cable car: https://www.ok-bergbahnen.com/unternehmen/qualitaetsmassnahmen/sanierung-moeserbahn-i/, a key connection in the Fellhorn-Kanzelwand two-country ski area, the next major investment is planned for the Walmendingerhorn. With the investment and modernization program "OK in Motion," the Oberstdorf Kleinwalsertal mountain railways are consistently pursuing their path toward sustainable tourism development.
Our mountains are a valuable natural, living, and economic space for all of us. Therefore, we treat them with great respect for nature and with the aim of making tangible improvements to what already exists. This way, you and we will continue to benefit from this special region for many years to come.
With the new Walmendingerhorn cable car, we are realizing a long-planned project close to our hearts to strengthen the region. This will ensure you can continue to reach our "relaxed" mountain safely and reliably in the future. We are acting with careful consideration – and take our responsibility for the landscape, our region and its inhabitants, as well as future generations, very seriously.
The Walmendingerhorn – an experience even without the cable car
While we're busy building the new Walmendingerhorn cable car, you can still enjoy beautiful days on the mountain. Various hiking trails, alpine pastures, and viewpoints remain accessible despite the construction. This summer, simply enjoy the diverse flora of the Walmendingerhorn on foot.
