Challenging two-country via ferrata on the Kanzelwand
Over a length of approximately 550 meters on the vertical wall, steep climbs, traverses with breathtaking views, a rope bridge, and challenging climbing passages require both stamina and the right technique. Surefootedness, a head for heights, and proper equipment are essential. The challenging two-country via ferrata offers a perfect blend of thrills and scenic beauty, making it ideal for experienced climbers who want to test their skills. The varied routes and spectacular views make this via ferrata on the Kanzelwand an unforgettable experience with breathtaking views of both Austria and Germany.
Approach, route & descent of the two-country sport via ferrata
The Kanzelwandbahn takes you quickly and comfortably to the mountain station, after which the approach leads down about 100 meters on the left into a basin to the lift house. Here, keep right towards Fiderepass and follow the trail to the base of the wall and the start of the Zweiländer sport via ferrata. Alternatively, you can descend from the Gundsattel, walk a few minutes towards Bierenwangalpe, and just before a stream, follow a path to the right into the valley, which leads in a large loop to the start.
The Zweiländer sport via ferrata starts moderately over blocky rock (maximum C) and then climbs to the first exposed traverses (D). A smooth ramp and a steep wall slab follow, which are physically demanding. After a longer traverse ©, you reach a rope bridge and further challenges such as pillars and an overhanging boulder ©. Finally, the path leads to the summit slab (B) and the exit.
From here, it's just a few steps to the summit cross of the Kanzelwand. At an elevation of 2,059 meters, you can enjoy a break with a magnificent view. The descent takes you south along the normal route, then turns right back to the mountain station. Those who haven't had enough can also try the Walsersteig Adventure Via Ferrata (difficulty level C). The Kanzelwand cable car takes you back down in comfort.
