The historic Nebelhornbahn cable car began its maiden voyage on a mild summer day in June 1930 and is still considered one of the longest passenger cable cars in the world. Over 90 years later, a new chapter is beginning for this veteran of German cable cars – its official and well-deserved retirement. Starting next season, a new 10-passenger gondola lift will transport enthusiastic outdoor enthusiasts to the mountain bliss of the Nebelhorn. The project is to be realized with an investment volume of approximately 55 million euros.
Plenty of space and more comfort
Construction work on the Nebelhorn in Oberstdorf began in the summer of 2019. The modernization of the cable car includes barrier-free access, a new valley and mid-station, and an expansion of the mountain station. Comfort is paramount here. Seating for every passenger allows for a scenic ride, while at the new mid-station, transfers are no longer necessary – thanks to shorter waiting times, you can continue comfortably toward the summit. The Seealpe station will continue to invite you to hop on and off for a trip to the Seealpe.
In recent weeks, work has primarily focused on the heart of the new Nebelhornbahn cable car: the technology and electronics inside the stations.
This work has now progressed to the point where test and adjustment runs are being conducted with the new cabins in the upper section. The temporary supports that temporarily supported the steel cable from the valley to the mid-station were dismantled last week.
In addition, intensive work is underway on the interior design and refinement of the new premises, so that hopefully, operations can begin as planned in about five weeks.
Always in harmony with nature, OBERSTDORF · KLEINWALSERTAL BERGBAHNEN is committed to environmentally friendly and ecological construction for this project. The new cable car will be built on existing routes and supports, while the stations themselves will be perfectly integrated into the landscape thanks to their natural architecture. An architectural highlight: the new valley station of the Nebelhornbahn in Oberstdorf. With local wood, impressive glass elements, and curved lines, it will be the impressive gateway to the mountain.
