Maßnahmen zur Qualitätsverbesserung

The historic Nebelhornbahn cable car began its maiden voyage on a mild summer day in June 1930 and is still considered one of the longest passenger cable cars in the world. Over 90 years later, a new chapter is beginning for this veteran of German cable cars – its official and well-deserved retirement. Starting next season, a new 10-passenger gondola lift will transport enthusiastic outdoor enthusiasts to the mountain bliss of the Nebelhorn. The project is to be realized with an investment volume of approximately 55 million euros.

Plenty of space and more comfort

Construction work on the Nebelhorn in Oberstdorf began in the summer of 2019. The modernization of the cable car includes barrier-free access, a new valley and mid-station, and an expansion of the mountain station. Comfort is paramount here. Seating for every passenger allows for a scenic ride, while at the new mid-station, transfers are no longer necessary – thanks to shorter waiting times, you can continue comfortably toward the summit. The Seealpe station will continue to invite you to hop on and off for a trip to the Seealpe.

Conclusion: Collection of the old cabins

After the charity auction on May 8, 2021, in which two of the cabins from the old Nebelhornbahn cable car were auctioned off for a good cause, it was time to pick them up last week.

One of them will find a place of honor in a private garden in Paderborn, while the second will adorn the miniature golf course in Ansbach. Both cabins were hoisted onto two trucks with the help of the Manitou from the Lipp carpentry shop, secured with tension straps, and transported to their new locations. The new owners were full of anticipation, and we are sure that the old cabins will serve a wonderful new purpose and continue to be put to good use. It is also very gratifying that the auction provided financial support for the good cause.

The other two cabins will remain in our possession for the time being. We are currently considering how they could be used in the future. This closes the chapter of the old cable car, and we eagerly began summer operations with the new Nebelhornbahn cable car on May 22, 2021.

Interior fittings, test drives and beautification work

The new Nebelhornbahn cable car, which was completed on time for its scheduled opening on March 26, 2021, is currently undergoing further test runs, exterior improvements, and the interior work on the system building. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, we were not yet able to open the new 10-seater gondola to guests, but we are using the time to put the finishing touches on all areas. The cable car itself runs regularly for personnel transport and recruitment.

At the valley station, asphalt paving work on the parking lots is still pending, and the interior work is progressing in the system building, which houses the NTC, a ski school, and ski rental, among other facilities. The building's facade and interiors feature a traditional wood look combined with modern furnishings. The offices in the administration building are already in use.

Test drives upper section, completion of facades

Numerous test runs are still being conducted on the upper section of the new Nebelhornbahn cable car to ensure all necessary adjustments are made. As employees, we were already able to take a test ride and capture our first impressions of the new 10-person cabins, both inside and out, for you. The seats, upholstered in cozy gray loden fabric, which also features our eagle, turned out to be particularly stylish and comfortable. The panorama is also beautifully displayed in the smaller 10-person cabins and will be clearly visible to every passenger in the future.

The facade work at the Seealpe station, as well as at the Höfatsblick station, has now been completed. From now on, work will only be carried out inside the station buildings.

At the valley station, installation of the glass elements on the wooden tunnel began last week. Little by little, the uniqueness of this architectural highlight is becoming visible. The interior work in the administration building and the service center is progressing, and work is also in full swing on the parking deck and the access road to the valley station.

Dismantling of temporary supports and test drives with new cabins

In recent weeks, work has primarily focused on the heart of the new Nebelhornbahn cable car: the technology and electronics inside the stations.

This work has now progressed to the point where test and adjustment runs are being conducted with the new cabins in the upper section. The temporary supports that temporarily supported the steel cable from the valley to the mid-station were dismantled last week.

In addition, intensive work is underway on the interior design and refinement of the new premises, so that hopefully, operations can begin as planned in about five weeks.

Review of column assembly and progress at the valley station

A lot has happened in recent weeks, especially in the lower section of the Nebelhornbahn, and the progress is clearly visible. All of the new cable car's pylons are now in place. Most recently, pylons 2 and 1 were erected. The special and challenging aspect of pylon 1 is that it is located directly behind the valley station, in the middle of a residential area. It was rebuilt on the same spot where the old pylon stood. The impressive video from Altmann Seilbahnen captures the assembly of all the pylons at lofty heights, under a wide variety of weather conditions.

Further progress can be seen at the valley station. The first cabin is now hanging here for various technical adjustments, and the service center facing Nebelhornstraße has been erected. The administration building has also been finalized, and the parking deck is clearly taking shape. As a special highlight, the wooden arch structure for the valley station enclosure is being installed today. This gives the new building at the valley station its very own charm.

Assembly of the valley station, facade work and start of installation of the railway technology

At the Nebelhorn valley station, the rollers of the gondola lift have been mounted on the railway building, making the platform clearly identifiable. Progress is also clearly visible on the foundations of the parking deck and the multi-purpose building. Column 2 has now been erected in the lower section, leaving only column 1 still to be completed.

At the Seealpe station, the facades and cladding of the railway building are well advanced. The rollers of the mid-station are now no longer visible; the wooden substructure is complete and thus completely enclosed.

At the Höfatsblick mountain station, the wooden substructure has been finalized, plumbing work has been completed, and the facade is currently being installed. The new building section blends harmoniously into the station thanks to its traditional wooden facade with shingles. The work in the coming weeks will focus on installing the railway technology inside the buildings.

Last run of the old railway, support dismantling and station progress

In the meantime, the Nebelhornbahn finally entered its well-deserved retirement, and the upper section made its last run. The cable was cut and pulled directly onto the new supports. Consequently, the dismantling of the supports can now begin in the upper section. Nothing of the old support 4 is now visible. Supports 5 and 6 will follow next.

For example, concrete work is currently underway in the old station buildings, which will soon obscure the old platform. Construction work on the Seealpe and Höfatsblick stations is almost complete. Large parts of the timber structure of the station buildings are now in place. The first elements of the station are also currently being installed at the valley station. The administration building has already been rebuilt, and the concrete work on the other buildings is clearly taking shape.

In the lower section, the construction of support 2 is also progressing. As a small highlight, the Nebelhornbahn's new 10-seater cabins have already been delivered. They are currently awaiting their first use in the valley and at the Seealpe station.

Progress of assembly of the upper section

While the foundations of the various buildings in the valley station area are gradually taking shape, and the locations of the railway building, administration building, parking deck, etc. are already clearly visible, the progress on the upper section is now particularly clear.

Installation at the Höfatsblick mountain station continues to progress. The highlight of the last week, however, was the installation of support 5, where the material could only be transported and hoisted into place by material cable car or helicopter. The work will be completed in the coming days, completing all supports of the upper section.

In the next step, the upper section of the Nebelhornbahn II cable car will soon be completely decommissioned. The old cables will be removed, pulled onto the new supports, and the dismantling of the old supports will begin. Construction of the railway building for the upper section at the Seealpe middle station is also progressing rapidly. Where only the first support stood three weeks ago, a modern platform has already been built, similar to the one at the mountain station.

Installation of supports and railway buildings Seealpe and Höfatsblick

Now that nothing of the old Nebelhornbahn cable car is left in the valley, the focus is clearly on excavation and foundation work. Supports 2, 3, 4, and 6 have already been completely erected, and all old supports in the lower section (1-3) have been dismantled and demolished. The foundations are currently being poured for supports No. 1, which is located directly in the village, and No. 5, which is positioned at a particularly steep point in the upper section. Initial assembly work on the cable car building has begun at Seealpe, making the route of the new Nebelhornbahn cable car clearly visible. At the Höfatsblick mountain station, the assembly of the cable car elements is significantly more advanced, and the structure is clearly identifiable as a mountain station. Most of the material for the technical buildings has already been delivered and is being temporarily stored on site.

Demolition work and construction of first supports
Progress is being made: demolition of the valley station, decommissioning of the lower section and temporary storage of the steel cable, as well as the completion of the first supports.

Demolition work has progressed at a rapid pace over the past few weeks, and now not much remains of the station buildings in the valley. Only the railway building still stands. But even this will soon be gone. A large excavation for the new buildings has already been completed in the former parking area directly at the entrance from Nebelhornstrasse. Also directly on Nebelhornstrasse, our ticket office staff are manning the fort in their information and ticket booths, offering guests advice and assistance with any questions.

A special milestone in the construction progress occurred at the beginning of the month. The lower section of the Nebelhornbahn cable car ran for the very last time. The trusty yellow large cabins, which served many years of service, were finally removed from the cable. Both are currently being temporarily stored at the Seealpe station. This week, the steel cable of the lower section was also removed from its supports. Since it will be reused in the new gondola lift, it was pulled onto temporary supports and tensioned, where it can be stored until the fall. Then it will be placed back on the new supports.

Concrete work at the Seealpe and Höfatsblick stations is almost complete, and foundation work is currently underway on supports 2, 5, and 6. Supports 3 and 4 have already been fully installed and shine in new splendor alongside their predecessors. As mentioned at the beginning, the work on support 5 is particularly spectacular due to its location. A crane and a separate cable car are the only means of transporting construction materials to the support. In general, the construction site in the upper area is a logistical masterpiece. Another cable car is being used up to the Höfatsblick mountain station, which is responsible for transporting materials alongside the old Nebelhornbahn cable car.

Gutting, excavation and foundations for new valley station
This week an important step was taken towards the demolition of the old buildings at Nebelhorn.

The first building, which previously housed NTC Oberstdorf's sales rooms, has already been completely demolished. In the spirit of sustainability, the entire building was sold and is being used again. Finally, all cashiers and administrative staff, as well as our operations managers, had to say goodbye to their old offices and, quite literally, "pack up all the tents." They then moved into their container offices, where they will work for the coming months. The gutting of the administration building could then begin immediately. Even in the cashier and waiting areas, the old building is barely recognizable, as everything is empty and gutted. Once all this work is completed, demolition will begin soon there as well.

The foundation for the new station building in the valley has now been completed. This is located directly in front of the old train station and will therefore be pushed forward quite a bit toward the ice rink. Directly next to it, the first work on the foundations is also being carried out in the excavation for the new administration building.

If you look up to the Seealpe and look closely, you can already spot the first new pylon. Pillar 3, which was still under construction in our first post, can now be seen in its entirety from the valley.

A cabin of the new Nebelhorn gondola now sits at the entrance to the Nebelhornbahn cable car on Nebelhornstrasse. Like its predecessor, it features a bright yellow color and offers space for 10 passengers. Anyone interested can get a first glimpse of what awaits them at Easter 2021.
