Easy to moderate, child-friendly trail. Walking time: approximately 2.5 hours.
The varied descent into the valley begins at the middle cable car station of the Fellhornbahn cable car. Due to its exciting nature and the well-paved alpine road leading down to the valley, the hike is ideal for a family vacation. Right from the start, the descent takes us to the beautifully situated Schlappoldsee. Nestled between high peaks and amidst lush, blooming mountain meadows, it's worth taking your time here. Especially since the walk to the nearby alpine dairy and refreshment stop is only a short one.
The Schlappold Alp - the highest alpine dairy in Germany
The alpine pasture is farmed every summer with up to 80 local dairy cows. During an alpine summer, the cows produce around 90,000 liters of milk, which is processed into Hochalpbergkäse and other cheeses, butter, and a variety of dairy products. The free-roaming alpine pigs, who, like many other farm animals, enjoy a carefree life up here, enjoy the whey left over from cheese making. There's also plenty of exciting things for children to discover, making a visit to the alpine pasture a successful day on a family vacation.
Risk of sore muscles!
After the numerous highlights in the first few meters, the descent from the Schlappoldalpe to the valley becomes more tranquil. The alpine road, somewhat steep in places but very well-paved, winds its way down towards the Stillachtal valley through numerous switchbacks. Halfway through, we reach the middle station of the Fellhornbahn II cable car at Schlappold Höfle. From here, the path leads over the charming "Laiter" and the original "Ringang" to the Fellhornbahn valley station.
