Easy to moderate, child-friendly trail. Walking time: approx. 2.5 hours.
Those who wish to descend from the cable car mid-station to the valley should make a worthwhile detour to the idyllic Schlappoldsee right at the beginning of the hike. After a surely stimulating stop, the trail first retraces its steps a few meters before winding down to the left through sunny, lush mountain meadows into the valley. After a tight right turn, the trail continues flatly along the mountain slope towards the "Obere Bierenwangalpe" (Upper Bierenwang Alpe).
Cow: Female domestic cattle after their first calving
With a little luck, you might get up close and personal with Allgäu Brown Swiss throughout the entire route. Unlike the cows in the Schlappold Alpine Pasture area, the young cattle in the Bierenwang Alpe area are not yet producing milk, which is because they have not yet given birth to calves. Past the unserviced lower Bierenwangalpe, it's not far to the Kanzelwandhaus.
Many paths lead down to the valley
A few meters after the Kanzelwandhaus, there are again two descent options. Those who choose the well-maintained and sunnier option should follow the Alpstrasse to the left further down into the valley. When vacationing with children, you'll quickly choose the right path. The natural yet easy Forest Trail offers many exciting things to discover, especially for children. After a while, the trail ends at a paved alpine road. Opposite, an alpine mountain trail leads further down the valley. Please note that this descent becomes increasingly difficult. Sturdy, ankle-high hiking boots are essential, as are surefootedness and a certain degree of head for heights. The descent is only recommended to a limited extent for family vacations.
The normal descent leads along the road to the left. Shortly before we reach Schlappold Höfle and the middle station of the Fellhornbahn II cable car, the more comfortable descent route rejoins our path. From Schlappold Höfle, which belongs to the alpine pasture of the same name, an alpine road leads past the Laiter mountain inn and the small settlement of Ringang down to the valley station of the Fellhornbahn.
