Fellhorn cable car I
Modernization of the Fellhornbahn I

The Fellhornbahn I will be faster, more comfortable, and more impressive.

After extensive overhaul work in 2024, the cable car will receive new cabins, state-of-the-art control technology, and a facelift of the stations in spring/summer 2025.

What does this mean?
• Shorter travel times
• Less waiting time
• A ride like an airplane – quiet, floating, and with even more panoramic views

The Fellhornbahn II will remain in operation as usual during the work.

Construction phase completed

The modernized Fellhornbahn I cable car successfully opened as planned at the beginning of August 2025 and now shines in its new splendor. Perhaps the biggest highlight of the new cable car: the floor-to-ceiling Plexiglas walls allow for a magnificent panoramic view while riding in the cabin.

A heartfelt thank you goes to all project participants, partners, and employees who contributed with great commitment to the successful implementation. We also thank our guests for their patience during the construction phase.

We look forward to the rest of the summer season with many enthusiastic visitors!

Upgraded aerial tramway with new cabins goes into summer season as planned
Today, the modernized Fellhornbahn I cable car opens its summer season after more than four months of renovations. Perhaps the biggest highlight for guests: floor-to-ceiling Plexiglas walls offer a magnificent panoramic view. But it's not just the cabins that are new...

Here are the technical measures at a glance:

  • Replacement of both large cabins
  • Replacement of the electric main drive and the diesel-hydraulic emergency drive
  • New hydraulic and controlled service and safety brakes
  • Overhaul of the gearboxes for the main and emergency drive
  • New cable car control system
  • Replacement of the cable guides on the supports
  • Installation of automatic sliding gates on the platforms for cabin exits
  • Special inspection for cable work: tensioning of the four suspension cables
  • Special inspections of the running gear and suspension arms
  • Special inspections of the drive wheels
  • A new shine for the surroundings*
As part of the technical overhaul of the Fellhornbahn, the platforms (platforms) at the valley and mountain stations also received a new look. The platforms were not only visually modernized, but also promise improved quality for passengers and better occupational safety for employees. These are the main changes:
  • Renovation of the platforms at the valley and mountain stations
  • Redesign of the railings and walkways on the platforms
  • Visual redesign of the platforms
  • Occupational safety measures in accordance with current regulations: walkways, railings, platforms, stairs
  • Infrastructure measures: Redesign of office and control rooms, partial renewal of the building's electrical systems, heating, and thermal insulation
  • Fire protection measures as part of the modernization

Special thanks go once again to everyone involved, especially to the entire Fellhornbahn team. This project would not have been possible without you!

We wish you safe travels on the "new" Fellhornbahn I!

Delivery and replacement of the new cabins

Today, the old large cabins on the Fellhornbahn I cable car were replaced with the new ones.
It was a very special moment for us when the two cabins met on the cable car...

Removal of all technology from the engine room

At the same time, concrete sawing work has begun for the new doors and windows in the control room and the new electrical workshop in the valley.

Renovation work on the platform in the valley is progressing.

Last transport trips on section 1 with old control

Today, the very last transports took place on the old FBO I large-cabin gondola lift.

After the last run, the electrical and mechanical control system was dismantled as planned.

New components were delivered, and the renovation of the platform is in full swing.

Factory revision

Factory Overhaul of the Suspension Arms

The suspension arms are the connecting component between the undercarriage and the cab. These are completely overhauled at the factory and inspected for any damage. Safety-relevant components are checked for damage using special testing procedures and replaced if necessary.

Factory Overhaul of Undercarriage 1
After Undercarriage 2 was already overhauled at the factory in 2020, it's now the turn of Undercarriage 1. It is disassembled at the factory into almost all of its individual parts.
Safety-relevant components are inspected for damage using a special testing procedure and replaced if necessary.

05/17/2024
Moving the supporting cables

The most heavily stressed section of the suspension cables (the bending area above the chain saddle - approximately 24 meters) must be cut every 12 years. To do this, the corresponding length is moved downhill from the reserve at the top station's bollard, and the end connection (casting cone) is recreated.

05/16/2024
The cabins are lifted by the rope

To enable the work, both cabins were lifted from the ropes using heavy equipment.

05/13/2024
1st construction phase: May 13 to July 5, 2024

As part of the upgrade of Section 1 of the aerial tramway, extensive preparatory overhaul work will be carried out this spring.

A further construction phase, including the construction of a new control system, drive and braking unit, new cabins, and a facelift of the stations, will be completed in spring or early summer 2025.

Safety comes first!
Therefore, the work extends beyond the legally required scope, and key components will undergo a factory overhaul at Garaventa in Switzerland.

The on-site work will be carried out by four external specialist technicians with the assistance of an average of four FBO specialists.
