The parent rock, the flysch, is responsible for this. It consists of alternating layers of schist, clay, and marly material.
They are highly prone to landslides and unstable. In shallow areas where water accumulated over permeable layers, smaller and larger moor complexes developed, which can be clearly seen from the cable car.
The Nebelhorn, on the other hand, is characterized by rugged limestone and dolomite formations. These constellations of the limestone-alpine zone make up the actual high mountains of the Allgäu Alps.
