He wasn't born in the Allgäu region, but for almost 20 years, Oberstdorf and the Upper Allgäu region were Christian Flühr's home. Countless people remember him for his spectacular skiing world records – and now he's returning to the place where his sporting career was shaped with a new record-breaking ambition. After a long hiatus, Flühr made an impressive comeback in January 2025 with his 14th skiing world record. Now comes the next chapter: #Project3M – more than 3 million vertical meters on skis in one year.
Part of this unique project will take place in Oberstdorf and Kleinwalsertal – a true labor of love for Flühr: "For me, it feels like coming home every time I drive south on the B19. I've lived here for almost two decades and probably spent more than 1,500 days skiing. It's all the more wonderful that I can also carry out my record-breaking project on the slopes of the Oberstdorf · Kleinwalsertal Bergbahnen, which have been my training ground for so many years and also the stage for my world records at 'Race Across The Allgäu,'" says Flühr with anticipation.
Old ties – new dimension
The OK Bergbahnen quickly decided that they wanted to be part of the record-breaking project. Henrik Volpert, CEO of OK Bergbahnen and Chairman of the Association of German Cable Cars, explains: "Christian Flühr is an old acquaintance of ours. It was immediately clear to us that we wanted to be part of this extraordinary project. It is an honor to present Oberstdorf and Kleinwalsertal on this international stage." Flühr will be traveling between Oberstdorf and Kleinwalsertal for around three weeks during the 2025/26 season. The focus will be on the Fellhorn-Kanzelwand, a two-country ski region, the Nebelhorn, and the Ifen. "The optimized valley run on the Kanzelwand, whose last bottleneck has been eliminated, will not only benefit Christian in his project – our guests will also experience significantly more space for carving this winter!" adds Dr. Andreas Gapp, CEO of OK Bergbahnen.
"Project 3M" – the ultimate challenge
More than 3 million vertical meters in just one year: That's the equivalent of a vertical distance from Munich to the Canary Islands, or horizontally from Lisbon to Vladivostok. To achieve this goal, Flühr must conquer 12,000 vertical meters on approximately 250 days of skiing – three times what an average skier can manage in one day. In total, he will visit 30 destinations on five continents. Despite this global dimension, the extreme athlete has made it a priority to ensure that his record also takes place in his home country. And he remains approachable: "Christian wants guests to experience him skiing firsthand. He skis during normal ski operations, hops into gondolas and chairlifts with everyone – this makes the project tangible for everyone," says Gapp.
Kick-off in the Allgäu
Even before the official launch, Flühr will be back in the Allgäu: The kick-off press conference for #Project3M will take place in October at the OK Bergbahnen. "We have something special planned – the press conference will break new ground, just like the world record," reveals Flühr with a smile.
