The OBERSTDORF · KLEINWALSERTAL BERGBAHNEN are taking another step toward sustainability: After the mountain railways in the two-country region already source 100 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources, they are now testing a biofuel based on plant waste and hydrogen.
The snow groomers on the Nebelhorn have recently been running on so-called HVO fuel. Its practical suitability will be tested by the end of this winter season: "Of course, this climate-friendly biofuel is more expensive than fuel made from fossil fuels, but in this way we reduce the machines' CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent. We are happy to accept these additional costs," explains Johannes Krieg, Technical Director of the OBERSTDORF · KLEINWALSERTAL BERGBAHNEN.
Further Benefits
In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, HVO fuel offers even more advantages: This promising fuel is low-odor and, thanks to its biodegradability, is environmentally friendly in the event of a spill on the slopes. By using HVO fuel, the OBERSTDORF · KLEINWALSERTAL BERGBAHNEN cable cars are once again demonstrating their sustainable approach, which has been a model for many years in all seven ski areas of the two-country region.
