After leaving the cable car station, we head towards the nearby Seealpe mountain inn. The Nebelhornbahn mid-station is idyllically situated in a valley basin between the Schattenberg ridge to the south and the rocky peak of the Gaisalphorn to the north.
After a few meters at Seealpe, we have the option of choosing between the gravel path on the right and the alpine road leading to the left for the first part of the descent. Please note: the slightly shorter gravel path is somewhat steeper in places and is only recommended for sure-footed hikers with suitable footwear. After leaving the first few meters behind us, both options converge again. From here, we follow the alpine road further into the valley.
Protective forest - shade provider
In the upper section of the descent, the path leads us through dense spruce forests, which provide pleasant shade on hot days. Further north, on the western slopes of the Rubihorn, these dense mountain spruces serve as a protective forest, protecting parts of Oberstdorf's town center from avalanches.
After a few bends and straight stretches downhill, the tree cover thins out in places, revealing panoramic views of the Oberstdorf mountains and the rooftops of the town. We also occasionally encounter the cable car that previously transported us from the valley station to the mid-station.
Enjoying the Stadium Atmosphere
Almost reaching the valley, our tour takes us across the grounds of the world-famous "Audi Arena" ski jumping arena. Here, in the Schattenberg Stadium, the opening event of the Four Hills Tournament takes place every year. The facility has also hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships in ski jumping and Nordic combined twice.
After a few hundred meters below the spectator stands, we follow the Schanzenstraße road, which leads down to the right. Now we continue along the Faltenbach until we cross it over a bridge to the Oberstdorf Ice Sports Center. From here it's not far back to the valley station of the cable car.
