Having arrived at the mid-station by cable car, we first follow the alpine road (trail no. 5) or the slightly shorter gravel path down into the valley. Shortly after the two alternatives converge again, we turn left to descend through the Faltenbachtobel ravine. Initially, we hike along a sunny ridge, offering beautiful views in both directions. Soon, however, we descend directly to the Faltenbach stream on a steeper path.
Hydropower Experience
Here stands the catchment structure of the Faltenbach hydroelectric power plant, built in 2011. With the help of the so-called "Tyrolean weir," a portion of the Faltenbach water is captured and channeled into the valley via a pressure pipeline. Crossing the bridge below the weir, we now continue down into the valley on the other side of the ravine. After gaining increasing elevation above the stream, we turn right to descend again to the roaring stream. This is where the most impressive section of the ravine begins. A steep descent down aluminum steps takes us to the deepest part of the gorge. It's impressive to see how efficiently this "hydropower" can be harnessed for energy.
Habitat for Specialists
It's worth lingering for a while to take a closer look at the flora and fauna. Numerous specialist animals and plants can be discovered in the microclimate of this humid habitat. A look at the rock layers to the right and especially to the left of the ravine provides a fascinating insight into the underworld of the Allgäu Alps. After a few meters of further descent, we reach a wider, well-maintained walking path.
Here we turn right over the bridge and, after a short while, reach the alpine road towards the cable car valley station (trail no. 5). Those who wish to continue down the Faltenbachtobel ravine into the valley can turn left after the small bridge. From here, the descent continues imposingly and impressively, but also steeply. Please note: this descent is not under the responsibility of the Nebelhornbahn cable car!
