Hiking boots & surefootedness required!
From the mountain station, the first section is the upper ridge trail towards Zaferna. After a sharp bend, a forest path leads over the scenic Heubergmulde valley to the northern flank of the Heuberg. The mostly shady northern slopes maintain pleasant temperatures even on hot summer days. Soon, the wide forest path transitions into a natural, alpine mountain trail. Here, in a sloping mountain forest, sturdy, ankle-high footwear, surefootedness, and a certain degree of head for heights are recommended. The trail then leads through a diverse range of landscapes to the pastures of the Walmendinger Alpe.
Short and sweet over hill and dale
The Walmendinger Alpe alpine pasture area is idyllically and secluded above the Schwarzwassertal valley. The upper and lower alpine pastures are separated by a steep, rocky escarpment. After the first few panoramic meters over lush pastures, the mountain trail climbs steeply through a picturesque, pristine mountain forest. Several stone towers bear witness to the presence of young mountaineers who have already visited the forest. For parents hiking with their children, building the tower would certainly be a welcome break. Following this, concentration and surefootedness are required on a few rocky meters!
An experience for flower lovers
After the final meters of the climb, a small trough valley opens up, formed by the last Ice Age. Gentians, orchids, and alpine roses are just a few of the diverse and protected mountain flowers that can be discovered on the picturesque pastures. Above the basin, the path becomes somewhat more rugged for a few meters. Here, surefootedness and sturdy footwear are again advantageous. A view over the Schwarzwassertal valley offers another magnificent view of the Ifen and Gottesacker.
Steel Structures
The ascent then changes sides of the mountain and the panorama. The final few meters lead through avalanche barriers. Rarely do you get this close to these fascinating steel protective structures. They are used throughout the Alps to protect valleys from avalanches.
Shortly afterward, the narrow path joins the wide and well-maintained summit climb just below the Walmendingerhorn, and just a few minutes later, you reach the Walmendingerhorn mountain station, where the Gipfelstuba (summit hut) and Hora Bar invite you to stop for a break.
