After leaving the cable car mountain station, we follow the signs for trail no. 3 to the Nebelhorn summit. After the first few meters on the well-maintained standard route to the summit station, our ascent soon branches off to the left to ascend over a grassy slope toward the ridge.
Panoramic view? – sure!
Reaching the top of the mountain ridge, the ascent soon switches to the other side of the ridge. Below some rugged rocky peaks, the rocky trail, partially secured by steel cables, traverses here before continuing up to the Nebelhorn summit. Due to the challenging terrain, it's advisable to find a secure footing to enjoy the magnificent view over the Grosser Grund and the Seealpe to Oberstdorf.
After the first difficult section, the ascent now mostly follows the ridge towards the Nebelhorn summit station. Even though we now find mainly grassy slopes on both sides of the trail, our concentration shouldn't slacken – especially in wet conditions.
A short geological excursion
The south ridge of the Nebelhorn is certainly exceptional for its mountain panorama and the diverse flora along the trail. It's also an excellent place to view the Nebelhorn from a different perspective.
All the landscapes up here are deeply influenced by their geological structure. Above us is the Nebelhorn massif with its light, vegetation-poor dolomite rocks, and to the south, on the Schattenberg ridge, are the green, grassy peaks made of soft fleckenmargel of the "Allgäu strata."
Shortly before reaching the summit area, we reach the normal ascent to the summit, which takes us the last few meters to the summit station of the Nebelhorn cable car.
